Munich Walking Book Group - The Alternative Book Group

Have you ever thought of joining a book club but been put off by the idea of being cooped-up with a group of people in a strange house and possibly having in return to host such a gathering yourself?

Or maybe you are reluctant because your experience tells you that one or two people tend to dominate the discussions or because you do not want to commit yourself to regular attendance?

Then the Munich English Walking Book Group (The Alternative Book Group) may be the answer for you.

Walk & Talk in English
The first outing of Walk & Talk got off to a good start on April, 27th.
25 people took part and all of them enjoyed both the conversation and the sunshine!

Meeting in the last week of each month the Munich Walking Book Group combines talking about a single subject and taking some not too demanding exercise at the same time.

Timing would be on the last Saturday of each month and the Group would meet outside Tambosi (under the arches on the Hofgarten side) at Odeonsplatz at 14:30 hours on each occasion and would then walk through the English Garden, whatever the weather, for about one hour and a half. There will be pauses but no stops. Walking in small groups of 4 or 5 will give everyone a chance to speak or give an opinion – and of course you are not bound to any particular group of people and movement between groups is welcomed and encouraged. There will be no pre-registration and it will be a ‘turn up and go’ event but each will be hosted by a Walk & Talk representative.

The idea is to explore the themes of the monthly book choice in some depth. This could be a valuable learning experience for non-native speakers and for native speakers an opportunity to do some reading with a specific purpose in mind.

The only commitment is that everyone taking part has read the chosen book.

The book title will be given in the middle of the month before by email through the GEA arrangements and will reconfirm timings and the meeting point. The event will be publicised in the GEA Monthly Programme and follow-up reminders will be issued. If you are interested or curious all you need to do now is to watch out for the emails.

The book for the April event was:
The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett (121 pages).
The April date was: Saturday April 27th (hosted by John Langton).

The book for the May event will be:
Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont by Elizabeth Taylor (205 pages).
The book is widely available as a paperback from bookshops or online.
It is also available as a listening book (Audio CD).
The May date is: Saturday May 25th (hosted by Barbara & Erwin Rosenfeld),
meeting outside Tambosi (under the arches on the Hofgarten side) at Odeonsplatz at 14:30 hours.

Looking forward to seeing you at this new venture for the GEA.
This idea has been successfully pioneered in England so it’s now time to see if it will work here in Munich, and we hope it will have widespread support.
