Bonfire Night - An English Tradition
Every year tens of thousands of bonfires are lit after dark in English villages, towns and cities
around November 5th.
Stuffed figures called 'guys' are tossed onto the fires.
Children and adults gather round the fires to watch and keep out the November cold
with hot drinks like cocoa, roasted chestnuts, baked potatoes and (spicy) cake like 'Parkin'.
(Look here for 33 Parkin Recipes.)
Who was that Guy?
Bonfire Night celebrates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot on November 5th, 1605 - more than 400 years ago.
Guy Fawkes and other traitors unhappy with anti-Catholic laws tried to blow up the King and English Parliament.
The plot failed and the government decreed that bonfires should be lit every year to celebrate.
Colonial Connection
The Bonfire Night tradition was taken overseas to English colonies.
It was known as Pope's Day in New England and was celebrated there until quite recently.
Bonfires are still lit on November 5th in Newfoundland, Canada and parts of New Zealand.
