Bonfire Night - Not only an English Tradition
This very old tradition of autumn bonfires going back to pre-christian times expresses the gratitude for the accomplished harvest and at the same time a plea for the protection of the winter crop and the animals.
In England Bonfire Night now also celebrates the failure of the
Gunpowder Plot on November 5th, 1605 -
more than 400 years ago.
Guy Fawkes and other traitors, unhappy with anti-Catholic laws, tried to blow up
the King and English Parliament.
The plot failed and the government decreed that bonfires should be lit every
year to celebrate.
Every year tens of thousands of bonfires are lit after dark in
English villages, towns and cities around November 5th.
Children and adults gather round the fires to watch and keep out the November cold
with hot drinks like cocoa, roasted chestnuts, baked potatoes and (spicy) cake like 'Parkin'.
