Voting by UK citizens living abroad
(from a letter published by the British Honorary Consul, Frankfurt)
As a UK citizen who lives abroad you may still be able to take part in the UK's Referendum on EU membership on 23 June.
However, for British expats who want to vote by post the deadline of 16 May is approaching fast.

Timing - relevant dates

  • 16 May: Electoral Commission's recommended deadline for overseas voters to register.
After this date you should register to vote by proxy.
  • 23-27 May: Electoral Commission's window for overseas voters' ballot papers to be sent out.
  • 7 June: Deadline for all registrations - including those requesting to vote by proxy
  • 23 June: EU referendum

UK Referendum on EU membership
If you haven't yet had time to register, then visit GOV.UK's website 'Register to vote'.
To register to vote you must have been registered in the UK in the last 15 years, and all you need to know is your National Insurance number and passport. (You can still register if you don't have a National Insurance number but you might have to supply more information to confirm your identity). And it only takes a few minutes.
Once you've registered, you can choose to vote by post, by proxy or in person. But a lesson learnt from previous polls is that the sooner you register to vote, the more time you have to arrange an absent vote.
You can find more information on the Electoral Commission's website.
Please note, however, the Electoral Commission would appreciate it if you could use the GOV.UK's website 'Register to vote' to register, to help them track which registrations are coming from overseas.
